Lake Bunyonyi is a crater lake in Africa and borders to Rwanda. It is located in southwestern Uganda close to kabale city. Lake Bunyonyi with its winding shores is 25 km long and 7 km wide and has a total of 29 islands. The punishment island is a historical as unmarried pregnant girls in Uganda were seen as a disgrace to the family and more importantly, as a source of lost wealth since a virgin girl was traded for cattle to be married. If a girl could become pregnant before marriage it was a dis-honor and a big shame to the family so girls were sent there to die. Scientific literature generally quotes a maximum depth of 40m (130 ft) ,but locals insist is much more deeper about 900m (3000 ft) which makes it the second deepest lake I Africa.

Lake area varies greatly according to rainfall, with an average range between 114 and 991 sq kms. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Naivasha completely dried up and effectively disappeared. The resulting open land was farmed, until heavy rains a few years later caused the lake to return to existence, swallowing up the newly established estates.
The lake and its surroundings are rich in natural bounty, and the fertile soils and water supply have made this one of Kenya’s prime agricultural regions. Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea, known as the yellow fever tree.
